Balinese culture was strongly influenced by Indian, Chinese, and particularly Hindu culture, beginning around the 1st century AD. It was during this time that the people developed their complex irrigation system subak to grow rice in wet-field cultivation. Some religious and cultural traditions still practiced today can be traced to this period.

Aside from Umalas, Tabanan is one of my favorite areas of Bali..it also has this untampered special spiritual heart, as well as endless organic farms, awash with rice field terraces, coffee and fruit plantations, etc...the experience of the villas, and living there in extended stay, feels very organic, naturally imaginative , soulful there....:)
